The easiest answer would be that you get a beer belly by drinking lots of beer or alcoholic drinks. But a beer belly, which is belly fat or visceral fat can be caused by a number of different things.

Its not the beer in particular that causes the beer belly but there is a reason why beer is associated with the dreaded beer gut.

It’s Not Beer; It’s the Calories

Your body cannot tell the difference between beer and other alcoholic drinks like wine or hard liquor.

However, with the consumption of alcohol, your liver stops burning fat and instead works hard to get rid of the alcohol. This causes the fat to get stored up. Where it is stored depends on a number of factors such as your age, sex and hormones.

But beer alone is not to be blamed for beer bellies. Any kind of food packed with calories, sugary juices or alcoholic beverages can do the same damage.

Beer gets blamed because typically, they’re consumed in high quantities with high calorie foods such as fried chicken, pizza and burgers. One beer can have as much as 150 calories and having a few of these can usually overload you with more calories than you need.

How Can Some People Drink & Not Get a Beer Belly

There is a simple equation to gaining weight and that is if you’re consuming more calories than you’re burning off, these calories are stored which means you’re going to gain weight.

This same equation works for losing weight as well – burn more calories than you’re consuming and you will keep the fat at bay.

This is why there are some people who can drink all the beer they want and still have a flat stomach. How can this be?

There are many reasons why this is so but it boils down to the fact that the person is not storing any excess calories. Maybe they’re active outside of the bar, they go to the gym regularly or they have a healthy diet.

This goes to show one thing. You can still drink beer and maintain a healthy weight and body.

Tips to Get Rid of a Beer Belly

There isn’t anything you can do to target your beer belly to get rid of it specifically. The only way to get rid of it is to follow a weight loss plan.

The good news is that the belly fat is the first to go when you’re losing weight.

A great starting point would be to cut down on beer consumption for the sake of progress. If you must drink beer, drink less than you would normally drink. For example, if you drink everyday, you might want to do it only on weekends or keep it to one or two beers per night.

To avoid eating unhealthy bar food, consume a healthy meal before going out so you won’t be so hungry for those barbecue wings at the bar. It will help you cut down on calories.

Get active between drinks by dancing or shooting some pool instead of sitting at the bar all night. You can also try going for a brisk morning walk the next day to burn off some of the calories.
